Compulsive Disorder - Techniques available to defeat the disorder

There have been a quite a number of techniques which the doctors and the therapists use to cure the compulsive disorder and the symptoms associated with the same, most of which have proved to be effective based on the clinical studies. Below are listed the techniques involved in compulsive disorder and their effectiveness.

1. Relaxation of muscles

Most of the techniques involved in muscle relaxation such as neck rolls, and calming breath are not that efficient when employed solely in the therapies. However, such techniques on muscle relaxation have proven to be more efficient when used with the systematic desensitization technique.

2. Systematic desensitization

This technique focuses on making the patient inert to the impulse which supposedly initiates the compulsive disorder. The technique of systematic desensitization works well when used along with the muscle relaxation technique.

3. Thought ceasing

This technique concentrates in ceasing the impulse that potentially results in compulsive behavior. This is achieved by making the patient wear a rubber band around his wrist and either snapping it or yelling the word "stop" at the time of occurrence of the impulse. Though this technique doesn't actually stop the impulse which results in compulsive behavior, it has proved to be efficient to deal with this disorder.

4. Modeling

This is an interesting technique wherein the action of the therapist seems to bring out the compulsive behavior of the patient. For example, the therapist without cleaning his hands might handle certain items that are contaminated from the patient's point of view, thereby which the compulsive behavior of the patient in washing the hands is brought out. But contrastingly, this technique has the possibility of harming the patients as they are already aware of their situation and do not like one to intentionally bring out such irrational behavior. Though this technique has been criticized by a handful of people, it has proven to overcome the patients' fear of exposure and helped out those patients who have compulsive behavior that has to do with hoarding.
